After redefining smartphone gaming with the ROG Phone last year ASUS has now announced the ROG Phone 2 in China. The phone with lots of firsts to its credit is hailed as the most powerful smartphone to date.

Design-wise the ROG Phone 2 largely resembles its predecessor with the same metal-and-glass design, rear side aggressive styling, and RGB lighting but the new phone is significantly taller and features an in-vogue in-display fingerprint scanner.

As already revealed by ASUS a couple of days ago, the AUS ROG Phone 2 indeed comes with a 120Hz display and Qualcomm’s freshly announced game-centric Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC. However, a mammoth 6,000mAh battery comes as a surprise against the rumor for a possible 5,800mAh battery.

Making the phone ideal for both gaming enthusiasts as well as the normal power users the ROG Phone 2 runs both stock Android and ROG UI leaving it on users’ choice. Even the refresh rate is customizable between 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz.

The ROG Phone 2 flaunts a 6.59-inch 2340x1080p full HD+ AMOLED display with 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 10-bit HDR support. The phone supports 120Hz refresh rate with 1ms latency. The 120Hz refresh rate is first for a phone having AMOLED display. Moreover, the ROG Phone 2 display boasts 240Hz touch sampling making it the fastest, trumping the Apple iPhone XS Max.

Under the hood, the ASUS ROG Phone 2 packs the Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC which brings 4% CPU and 15% GPU enhancement to the table compared to the Snapdragon 855 SoC. The chipset pumps power in alliance with up to 12GB RAM and up to 512GB UFS 3.0 based internal storage.

The camera has never been a strong suit of a gaming smartphone. But the ROG Phone 2 relative to its predecessor has better camera unit- actually, same as the ASUS ZenFone 6. The phone has a dual-rear-camera setup with a 48MP Sony IMX586 primary sensor with f/1.79 aperture and a 13MP wide-angle sensor with a 125-degree depth of field. Upfront, at the top right of the forehead of the device lies a 24MP selfie shooter.

The ASUS ROG Phone 2 is also one of the first commercial phones to have used a gigantic 6,000mAh battery. Given a large and high refresh rate display, a bigger battery was anyway needed. But a 30W Quick Charge 4.0 support to it adds additional heft to the phone.

A beefy set of hardware components call for a better cooling system. So, the ROG Phone 2 employs GameCool II heatsink system which comes with 3D Vapor chamber technology to siphon away heat. Besides, there is also a rear “Aerodynamic System” vent to cool the device.

For an elevated sound experience, the smartphone uses dual front-firing speakers with DTS-X Ultra support. Amongst other things, the ASUS ROG Phone 2 supports 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, 3.5mm audio jack, and two USB Type-C ports along with side-mounted connectors for accessories.

The ASUS ROG Phone 2 has gone up for preorders in China today. However, the sale will kick off starting July 31. The 8GB RAM base variant is priced at CNY3,499 and the 12GB RAM base variant is set for a CNY5,999 price tag.

So far, there is no word as to when the redoubtable ASUS ROG Phone 2 will see the daylight in global markets. Nevertheless, September timeline for the launch is more likely at this moment.
