Samsung’s long-delayed Galaxy Fold has finally been announced and it is going on sale in South Korea from tomorrow i.e. September 6 before it sees the daylight in other markets.
Samsung’s ambitious foldable smartphone was first unveiled at MWC in February this year going head-to-head with HUAWEI which had also showcased its foldable counterpart, the Mate X. The latter is now rumored to launch in November against the earlier rumor of a September launch. HUAWEI has already said that the Mate X is not yet fully ready for a commercial release.
Coming back to the Galaxy Fold, after the unveiling at MWC it was set for an official release in April this year. However, Samsung had to postpone the release following the multiple reports of early reviewers encountering problems related to the fragility of handset’s screen and hinge mechanism.
Ever since Samsung has blown hot and cold over the question of relaunching the Galaxy Fold amidst several reports suggesting to the point that Samsung has shelved the Galaxy Fold for good.
But last month indication came from the company that finally the Galaxy Fold will enter the market towards the end of September following the completion of a redesign process that fixed the problems associated with the screen and hinge of the device. So, the surprising news of early September release has come as music to the ears of fans, at least in South Korea.
The Galaxy Fold uses two displays- an expansive 7.3-inch Infinity Flex display when the device is opened and a 4.6-inch secondary cover display when folded. The phone runs One UI based on Android Pie optimized to switch between the two displays.
There is a Multi-Active Window feature that allows the users to run multiple windows all at once for a better multitasking. Another App Continuity feature ensures the uninterrupted transition of apps from one display to another. Since it is a foldable device the cameras are in good numbers too- six cameras in total.
A 10MP selfie shooter lies on the cover display while 10MP+8MP dual camera setup is situated at the top of the inner Flex display. An array of triple cameras are mounted on the rear side of the device with 12MP (primary sensor) +16MP (ultra-wide sensor) +12MP (telephoto sensor) configuration.
A Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC under the hood powers the Galaxy Fold in alliance with 12GB RAM and 512GB built-in storage. Some markets could get an Exynos 9825 SoC as well. There is a total of 4,380mAh battery lying inside in bifurcated form to allow the phone to fold up.
After the launch in the home country, Samsung Galaxy Fold is said to launch in the UK, Singapore, France, and Germany on September 18. US launch is not revealed but the device is expected there on September 27 with a likely price of USD1,980- a whopping amount surely.
