Google is turning millions of Android phones into earthquake detectors across more than 200 regions, giving people a few seconds to react before the shaking starts. For anyone living in a quake zone, those seconds can decide whether you get under a table or get hit by something falling.

[Google has expanded](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/platforms/android/android-earthquake-alerts-expansion-2026/) the Android Earthquake Alerts System from 98 countries and regions to more than 200, with Panama and Guatemala named among the new additions.

The company also said its “Be Ready” alert will soon show a map of detected shaking, an estimated magnitude, suggested actions, and a button for more information. Google says it has sent over one billion alerts since the system launched in 2021.

Panama and Guatemala join more than 200 supported regions
---------------------------------------------------------

I care less about the headline number than about who gets covered. Going from 98 to more than 200 means a large group of Android owners who had no warning on their phones now have one.

Google, unfortunately, did not list every new region in its announcement, so check the [Android Earthquake Alerts System](https://crisisresilience.google/android-early-earthquake-warnings) page to see whether yours is included.

How Be Aware, Be Ready and Take Action differ
---------------------------------------------

Google now describes three tiers.

- Be Aware is a simple alert for estimated light shaking that tells you an earthquake was detected nearby.
- Be Ready is a more detailed alert for stronger shaking, telling you to prepare to act.
- Take Action goes full screen for moderate to heavy shaking and gives immediate advice on staying safe.

I like that the alert scales with how worried you should be. A phone that treats every small tremor like a disaster teaches people to ignore it.

What the updated Be Ready alert will show
-----------------------------------------

In the coming months, Be Ready will add a map with a radius around where shaking was detected, plus an estimated magnitude and actions you can take. A button will let you learn more as information comes in. Magnitude is the detail I would want most, since it gives you a quick sense of how serious the situation is.

None of this is live yet, and Google has not given a date beyond “coming months.” Until then, the alert you get is the current version.

How phone sensors detect the first signs of shaking
---------------------------------------------------

The system uses the sensors in Android phones to catch the earliest signs of an earthquake. Google calls it the world’s largest mobile-based earthquake detection network.

I actually find that really appealing, because your Android phone is part of the network and not just a receiver at the end of it.

The mishaps Google has had along the way
----------------------------------------

9to5Google notes the [system has had a couple of mishaps](https://9to5google.com/2026/10/15/android-earthquake-alerts-update-regions/), even as it credits it with saving lives. A billion alerts is also a billion chances to get something wrong. More detail in each alert should make it easier to judge a questionable one, which is the main reason I’m glad Google is focusing on that.

A few seconds of warning only helps if you already know where you would go. Decide that tonight, before your phone has to do it for you.
