# Samsung turned a few wrong PIN attempts into a factory reset you can't undo

A wrong PIN, typed one too many times, can now wipe a [latest Galaxy phone](https://bestforandroid.com/radar/samsung-galaxy-z-fold8-ultra-fold8-flip8-launched-foldable-lineup-whats-new/) for good. Samsung’s One UI 9.0 update means 13 wrong PIN attempts lock your device permanently.

Once a device running One UI 9.0 hits that 13th wrong PIN guess, it locks permanently. A factory reset, which wipes everything, is the only way back in.

It’s the same feeling as watching an ATM swallow your card after too many wrong tries. Except this time it’s every photo and text thread on your phone that disappears with it, not just a piece of plastic.

How the lockout timer escalates

The failures don’t pile up quietly in the background. Five wrong attempts get you a 1-minute lockout. Nine attempts, 90 minutes. Twelve, a full day.

[Samsung says](https://www.samsung.com/sa_en/support/mobile-devices/one-ui-9-lockscreen-security-policy/) the system shows your remaining attempts on screen now, and it won’t count two identical wrong entries back to back as separate failures, so a repeated typo doesn’t burn through your tries as fast.

The 13th attempt doesn’t come with a countdown. There’s no second chance after it. You will be left with a factory data reset.

Why fingerprint and face unlock don’t save you
----------------------------------------------

I unlock my phone with my thumb almost every time, but that doesn’t matter here. Android still requires you to type your actual PIN, pattern, or password at least once every 72 hours, whether biometrics is enabled or not.

If you’ve leaned on your face or thumb for months and genuinely forgot your backup code, this is the update that finally catches up with you.

What happens if you actually forget your password
-------------------------------------------------

Samsung can’t remotely look up or reset your lock screen credentials. Forget it completely, and a factory reset is your only way back in. After that, you still need your Samsung Account and Google Account to [clear Factory Reset Protection](https://bestforandroid.com/bypass-frp-on-samsung-device/), so losing access to those too turns a bad day into a genuinely bad week.

None of this is really aimed at regular users. It’s meant to stop brute-force attempts, where someone random is grinding through password after password until one sticks. But the tradeoff lands on everyday people too, the ones who’ve blanked on their own PIN standing in line for coffee.

Now it has apparently become more important to actually memorize your PIN code; also, worth [backing up your data to cloud storage](https://bestforandroid.com/best-data-backup-strategies/), or if you don’t trust that, then you might want to back up locally more frequently because you never know when you could be locked out after failed PIN attempts.
