Back in May this year Xiaomi launched its flagship Mi 9 and ever since rumors were doing the round that the company was prepping a 5G version of the device. It seems those rumors were true as the phone has made its appearance on TENNA certification website in China. It is expected that the 5G version of the Mi 9 will be branded as the Xiaomi Mi 9S.
Essentially, the alleged Mi 9S is the 5G upgrade over the Mi 9 but it comes with certain other changes as well. Since it will be 5G-equipped it has a bigger 4,000mAh battery for support as against the 3,300mAh battery found in the Xiaomi Mi 9.
Due to the bigger battery, the Mi 9S becomes thicker at 157.21×74.64×8.95mm and with 196 grams it acquires some more weight compared to the original Mi 9. However, the Mi 9S going to stick to the 6.39-inch full HD+ Super AMOLED display.
As per TENNA, the SoC used by the Mi 9S is clocked at 2.956GHz which hints at the possibility of the newly launched Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC which is a beefier version of Snapdragon 855 SoC. The processor is equipped with Qualcomm’s 5G model for 5G connectivity.
Further, the chipset will be teamed with Adreno 640 GPU, up to 12GB RAM, and up to 512GB internal storage with no expansion support.
Looking at the images listed at TENNA, it seems the Mi 9S will mount a triple-rear-camera setup and a water-drop notch exactly similar to the Mi 9. The optical image stabilization (OIS) is likely addition to the main camera. There won’t be a headphone jack and the fingerprint scanner will be embedded into the display.
Other details of the Mi 9S are not known as yet. The smartphone is expected to see the daylight in September, which is still a couple of weeks away from now. We presume there are more leaks in the offing to give us more info related to the device.
Nevertheless, for a perspective, the original Mi 9 comes with a 6.39-inch full HD+ Super AMOLED display with a water-drop notch and Gorilla Glass 6 protection. Driving the handset is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC paired with up to 8GB RAM and up to 128GB internal storage.
The triple cameras strapped on the back include a 48MP Sony IMX486 primary sensor, a 16MP wide-angle sensor, and a 12MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. A 20MP camera on the front remains enclosed inside the front-mounted water-drop notch. For the colorways, the Xiaomi Mi 9 comes in three different shades such as Black, Blue, and White.
