Xiaomi is quite well-known for its value-for-money devices. Last year it created a big splash in the smartphone industry by launching the POCO F1, world’s cheapest smartphone powered by a flagship-grade Snapdragon 845 SoC with a starting price of INR20,999 (Approx. USD300), which is now selling at INR17,999 (Approx. USD258).

The POCO F1 was, however, plastic built and with thick bezels it certainly didn’t look premium, quite so understandably to adjust its cheap pricing. Nonetheless, it remains a hot favorite amongst price-conscious buyers who want their devices uncompromised on performance.

Since the late last year, we have been hearing that Xiaomi is working on POCO F2 as the successor. When the Redmi K20 Pro launched in China in May this year, speculation started that the same device will launch as the POCO F2 in India and elsewhere.

But bellying the hopes, the Redmi K20 Pro launched in India last month with its original moniker. This gave rise to a fresh round of speculations that the POCO F2 is no longer in the scheme of things of Xiaomi beacuse the Redmi K20 Pro has taken its place by coming packed with the flagship Snapdragon 855 SoC.

The talk of the discontinuation of the POCO brand was further strengthened when POCO phone global head, Jai Mani, quit his post just a couple of weeks ago.But interestingly the POCO F2 is again back in the scene, reviving the speculation that it is still on the cards.

Xiaomi India’s head of marketing, Anuj Sharma, recently confirmed that POCO team, though smaller now, still exists and will continue to make phones. He, however, didn’t mention specifically about the POCO F2. But it is easy to guess that if POCO team exists the POCO F2 will be the phone to expect in the future.

A leakster on Twitter a couple of days ago posted that the POCO F2 is pretty much alive and will come with AMOLED screen which will be an upgrade from the LCD screen of the POCO F1. The reliable SlashLeaks also shared a POCO F2 screen protector with a water-drop notch. The bezels appear pretty thin for a high screen-to-body ratio design.

The POCO F2 was expected to launch with Snapdragon 855 SoC but since the latter chipset already made its way to the Redmi K20 Pro, it is now expected to pick the latest Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC.

Then again, the alleged POCO F2 has gone through the paces of Geekbench and surprisingly it integrates the Snapdragon 845 SoC, the same one which is present in the POCO F1. Moreover, it runs Android 8.1 Oreo which defies logic since even the budget smartphones in 2019 are coming with Android Pie out-of-the-box.

So far, we can say, there is no clarity about the specs of the POCO F2. We can’t rule out if there also exists a Pro version of the POCO F2 which will have the Snapdragon 855/855+ SoC while the standard POCO F2 will come packing the Snapdragon 845 SoC. We need to wait for some more time before a clear picture emerges in this regard. Stay tuned.
