With the beta launch of the J1 Assistant by Matter, we’ll examine what to expect from this alternative AI assistant designed to discover or request information and schedule tasks.
If you’re looking for an alternative to ChatGPT, the J1 Assistant is an option that not only uses its own large language model (LLM) called Jarvis but also gives users the additional option to query both ChatGPT and Perplexity without leaving the app.
You can now download Matter’s J1 Assistant on Android as an APK on Matter’s website, which is regularly updated with new features and bug fixes every few days as of writing.
With so many AI assistants on the market, you might want to consider what value these AI assistants offer you. Many are simply nothing more than repackaging OpenAI’s AI agent, ChatGPT. But solutions from OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, and others aren’t tailored for more specific tasks.
Getting Started: Interacting with Jarvis
After you’ve downloaded the app, you’re presented with a window with a greeting from Jarvis, the AI assistant powering the J1 Assistant app. In fact, this is where Jarvis encourages you to ask it to complete some complex tasks – even “tricky” ones.

As the J1 Assistant is designed for tasks, you can think of a situation in which you might wish you’d had an assistant. It might be finding information. However, the J1 Assistant can also take the additional step of jotting that information down in your notes, scheduling and reminding you of upcoming events, or sending info to your contact as messages, sometimes simultaneously.
- To begin talking to Jarvis, tap on the greyed ‘Microphone’ button and hold. This will pop up a window that transcribes your request. But it also displays a rather distinct-looking multi-option menu that Matter has named “Ripple Touch.”

- After you speak your request, you can swipe up to any of the default applications. To have its Jarvis AI execute the task, simply swipe up to the orange and black J1 Assistant logo.
- You also have the option to save the request as a note simply by querying ChatGPT, searching for it on Google, or sending your query as a message to your contacts.
Saving Queries as Notes
When you save any queries or requests you’ve made as a note, this will show up in the “Notes” tab within the app. Here, we’ve asked Jarvis to find a blue dress and save the results as a note, which it’s done.
However, within the notes feature, you’ll find that you can even fix the text using Jarvis by tapping on the AI button in orange in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Tapping on this will open up a few options. This includes the ability to proofread, lengthen, or shorten the text. You can even change the tone of the text, like Google’s Magic Compose feature for its Gemini LLM. Finally, you can also instantly translate the text.

Saving Queries as To-Dos
Like saving requests as a note, anything that might require you to receive a reminder or be added to a calendar will be logged in the ‘To Dos’ section within the J1 Assistant app. If needed you can make changes to the To Do item by simply tapping on the item.

Customization Features
- Changing Ripple Touch Apps: You can swap out the different applications you want to use to execute each query.
- Changing the AI Assistant Name: You can also change the name of your AI assistant from Jarvis to Samantha, Watson, Alfred, or Sancho.
Some Examples Of How You Might Use The J1 Assistant
You can make endless requests with Jarvis, but you can test out the following examples in case you need a spark of inspiration.
- Celebrate a Special Occasion: Jarvis can recommend a restaurant for you and your significant other to celebrate a special occasion like a birthday or a holiday like Valentine’s Day. You can also ask Jarvis to remind you to book that restaurant at a specified date and finally help you find a surprise gift of a specific value to accompany the occasion.
- Never Miss Your Sports Team’s Games: Ask Jarvis to find every match from your favorite sports team, be it football, soccer, baseball, or others, and set reminders to inform you about those matches at a designated time before they start.
- Plan for a Healthy Meal: Create a healthy weekly meal plan to help you with your diet by giving Jarvis a couple of must-have ingredients to work with and collecting those meal plans into a folder to view and cook daily.
