MediaTek’s new chip cuts power use by 61% while boosting speed and AI performance

MediaTek revealed its newest flagship processor, the Dimensity 9600 Pro, built on a 2-nanometer node that the company says cuts multi-core power use by 61% while boosting speed, AI performance, and gaming graphics.

MediaTek has unveiled the Dimensity 9600 Pro, its first flagship smartphone chip built on a 2 nanometer process, promising a major jump in speed and a steep drop in power use for the Android phones set to launch this quarter.

It is the same relief as finally shutting your laptop after it has been running hot on your lap for an hour, except here it is your phone that gets to stop working overtime just to keep up with a video call or a round of Genshin Impact.

What’s actually new inside the chip

The Dimensity 9600 Pro uses a 2+3+3 All Big Core CPU design, and MediaTek says it delivers up to 17% faster single-core performance and up to 15% faster multi-core performance than last year’s chip.

The bigger number is the 61% drop in multi-core power consumption. That is the kind of improvement that shows up as less heat in your hand and more hours before you reach for a charger.

Why the AI upgrades matter here

The chip runs a dual-NPU setup MediaTek calls its Agentic AI Engine, built to handle tasks on the phone itself instead of leaning on the cloud. It can reportedly run AI models with up to 30 billion parameters locally, cuts power use for always-on AI by 40%, and processes prompts 51% faster than the previous generation.

In practice, that should mean things like live translation or a voice assistant responding quicker, and still working when your signal drops.

Gaming and camera get a real boost

The new G2-Ultra NX GPU pushes peak performance up 27% while using 24% less power at that peak, with MediaTek promising console-style gaming with ray tracing at up to 185fps.

On the camera side, the chip supports 4K video at 240 frames per second for slow motion, plus 17EV of dynamic range for photos. That is the kind of spec that used to live inside a dedicated camera, not a phone in your pocket.

Which phones get it first

MediaTek also introduced a lower-tier version, the Dimensity 9600M, aimed at bringing similar AI and gaming gains to more affordable flagships. Vivo’s X500 Pro and X500 Pro Max, along with Oppo’s Find X10 Pro Max, are expected to be among the first phones built around the new chip, with more devices landing later this quarter.

Qualcomm is expected to answer with its own next-generation Snapdragon chip at its Summit later this month, so this fight is far from over. If you are holding off on a new phone, it might be worth waiting a few more weeks to see how this all shakes out.
