SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies Corp.) told investors this week that it wants your phone plan. Not the satellite backup service it already runs, but a full mobile network built to compete directly with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. Wall Street reacted to this news within hours.
During an investor call, SpaceX confirmed plans to build a mobile service network aimed squarely at the three major U.S. carriers. The company is using 65 MHz of wireless spectrum it bought from EchoStar for $19.6 billion, spectrum the FCC already cleared for transfer back in May. Shares of AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile fell between 2.2% and 4% after the announcement.
A few percentage points off a stock price doesn’t sound dramatic on its own, but it’s the kind of drop that makes a boardroom go quiet fast, the same way your stomach drops when your manager moves up a routine meeting with zero explanation.
Why SpaceX spent $19.6 billion on EchoStar’s spectrum
The AWS-3 spectrum SpaceX bought from EchoStar isn’t just for satellites. It has terrestrial components, meaning SpaceX can use it to build actual ground-based cell coverage, not only beam signals down from orbit.
“The spectrum that we purchased from EchoStar does have terrestrial components, so we definitely intend to build out terrestrial,” SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said during a post-earnings call on Tuesday.
That distinction matters a lot.
It’s the difference between a backup service for dead zones and something built to carry your regular calls and data every single day.
How the satellite and ground network would work together
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said the company is planning a hybrid structure, small, low-cost base stations with Starlink antennas built in, spread out widely instead of relying on the fewer, larger towers carriers use today.
Shotwell said this next-generation service would be 100 times better than the current Starlink Mobile. Elon Musk has made a similar case, arguing a combined satellite and ground network could beat traditional carriers on both coverage and bandwidth.
What Starlink Mobile actually does right now
Right now, Starlink’s satellite-to-cell service runs through T-Mobile under the name T-Satellite. It fills coverage gaps and works during disasters, but it is not a replacement for a normal data plan.
T-Mobile CEO Srinivasan Gopalan said in July that the service made up just 0.0003 percent of the carrier’s total network traffic, even during the busiest summer stretch. SpaceX is now talking about next-generation satellites launching in 2027, with the upgraded service following later that same year.
Why some analysts aren’t worried yet
Not everyone on Wall Street is convinced this changes much soon. Analysts point out that AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile have spent 30 years building the infrastructure SpaceX would now need to match. That kind of buildout takes real time and real money, unless SpaceX strikes a deal to ride on an existing carrier’s network instead of building its own from the ground up.
SpaceX hasn’t said how much it plans to invest, and neither AT&T nor Verizon has issued an official response yet.
When looking at the history and what SpaceX has achieved in the past, it has spent years teaching people to expect the impossible from a rocket company. Whether that same trick works on your phone bill is the part nobody, including SpaceX, has actually proven yet. Only time will tell.
