Google just pushed a new Android build to Pixel phones, and it’s live right now. One of the fixes buried in there is for the Gemini bug that’s been crashing phones outright for weeks.
Google released Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1 for Pixel devices today. The update patches eight bugs, including a crash that caused Pixel phones to unexpectedly reboot when invoking Gemini, and a separate issue where notifications randomly vanished from the shade until you restarted the phone.
What Beta 1 actually fixes
Beyond the Gemini crash, this build cleans up a handful of small annoyances. Bluetooth re-pairing was failing silently after a remote bond loss, so your earbuds would just sit there disconnected with no explanation. Media controls were flashing on the lock screen even when an app’s notifications were turned off. A multi-finger drag-and-drop gesture could freeze touch input in the source app entirely.
None of these are headline features. They’re the kind of paper cuts that make a phone feel unreliable in ways you can’t quite name, until someone lists them out and you realize you’ve hit half of them yourself.
Should you install QPR2 Beta 1 right now?
There’s a catch, though. QPR2 Beta 1 is a developer preview for the December release, not the stable update most people are waiting on. If you’re currently running the QPR1 beta and want the public stable version instead, don’t install today’s update.
Opt out of the beta program now, before this build lands, and you’ll get the stable release without wiping your device. Install QPR2 Beta 1 first, then decide to opt out, and you lose everything on the phone instead.
Which Pixels are getting it
The beta covers the Pixel 6a through Pixel 10a, along with the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold lineup and the Android Emulator. Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are sitting this one out. Both phones hit their five-year mark this October, so their software support window is closing, and QPR1 was already their last beta ride.
Android Authority’s Stephen Schenck noted that Google’s own Mishaal Rahman confirmed this build is the actual software Pixel owners will see land as the December release once it goes stable, not a throwaway test build. It’s basically a preview of what your phone looks like in five months.
