Your smart TV pitches you shows you never asked for before it lets you watch the one you did. Some TV owners simply decided to hand over this problem to an AI, and it successfully debloated their TVs.
A growing number of smart TV owners are asking AI agents to strip sponsored ads, background apps, and tracking services from their Android TVs. The method runs through a computer on the same Wi-Fi network and a free GitHub prompt, and thousands of people have already tried it on brands including Sony, Hisense, TCL, Xiaomi, and Fire TV.
What CleanYourTV and TVDetox actually change?
CleanYourTV started when its creator got tired of the ads on his parents’ TV. He had Claude Code build a home screen with only their apps, shared the prompt, and thousands of people repeated it. He says it has been tested on more than 80 models from over two dozen brands. It doesn’t need root access, and you can go back to factory settings.
TV Detox, from Ansub Khan, works through ADB, a tool that lets a computer control the TV over the network. It shuts down background apps and ad-tracking services, then installs a launcher with big app tiles instead of content cards. It targets Android 9 through 14, though Android Authority notes the testing so far used emulators rather than real TVs. I’d treat that as a yellow flag.
One user reported disabling 25 apps and shrinking a 192 MB stock launcher to 83 MB, which would explain why these TVs feel faster afterward.
How automatic content recognition tracks what you watch
Most modern smart TVs use automatic content recognition, or ACR, which identifies what’s on screen from screenshots or audio clips. That data can be sold to advertisers or used to target ads on the TV’s own home screen. I never agreed to a TV that takes notes on my evenings, and if these cleanups catch on, they could cut into that business.
How to debloat your Android TV or Google TV with an AI assistant
You need a computer on the same Wi-Fi as the TV and a coding assistant with shell access, such as Claude Code, Codex, or Gemini CLI. Expect it to take about 15 minutes.
- Turn on developer mode. On the TV, go to Settings → Device Preferences → About and press OK on Build seven times. Go back to Developer options and turn on USB debugging, plus Network or ADB debugging if you see it. Keep the TV on.
- Paste the prompt. Open your assistant on the computer and paste in the PROMPT.md from Clean Your TV (github.com/Gathin23/cleanyourtv) or the prompt from TV Detox (github.com/Ansub/tv-detox). Fill in your TV’s brand and model.
- Approve the connection. Accept the “Allow USB debugging?” message on the TV.
- Review before anything changes. Ask the assistant to sort every app into safe to turn off, needed by the TV, and apps you use. Approve each change, and have it turn apps off instead of deleting them.
- Answer the checklist. Pick the apps you use, the four that go in the dock, and whether to keep the voice assistant, Chromecast, and updates.
- Let it build the launcher. It backs up, installs the home screen, and can also turn off animations and the screensaver.
- Restart and check. Reboot once, confirm the TV starts normally, and compare free memory before and after.
Never let it disable Google Play services, Google Play, Settings, System UI, the keyboard, Bluetooth, or your HDMI inputs. This is what worked for the developers, not professional advice, so use it at your own risk.
Where the AI cleanups have gone wrong
Some said they bricked an Android TV, and a few got stuck halfway through a Fire TV. It is well-known that Amazon blocks some changes, like swapping the home screen. Similarly, smart TVs that are manufactured by Samsung and LG are harder to debloat/modify because they don’t run Android TV.
It is important to be aware that changing the software also voids your warranty, so on a new TV I’d suggest you skip it. Moreover, security is another worrying aspect. Vibe-coded projects can overlook vulnerabilities or be open to prompt injection, and developers may stop maintaining them after a while.
Launcher apps that skip the AI
If you want a cleaner home screen without giving a chatbot the controls, ATV Launcher, Projectivy Launcher, and FLauncher replace the home screen on Android-based TVs. Though these apps mostly hide the clutter rather than removing it/disabling it from your TV, they carry far less risk.
