What is Douyin
Douyin is the original short-form video app from ByteDance, the company that also makes TikTok. The two apps look almost identical, but they run as separate networks. Douyin is the home version for China and TikTok is the international build, and content does not cross between them. People call Douyin "Chinese TikTok" for exactly that reason. In practice it is the parent app that TikTok grew out of after the 2016 launch.
The heart of it is the vertical For You feed. An AI recommendation engine watches what you linger on and serves up a personalised stream of clips that run from 15 seconds to a few minutes.
