What Black WhatsApp is
Black WhatsApp is a third-party modified build of the regular WhatsApp messenger. The main change is visual. The green header, chat bubbles, and tab bar turn a deep black that reads better in low light and on OLED screens, where true-black pixels save battery. Underneath that new skin sits the same messaging core you already know, so chats, voice notes, and calls behave exactly as before.
The mod also unlocks settings the official client keeps hidden. You can hide your last-seen, freeze your online status, turn off read receipts per contact, and push status posts and shared files past the limits the stock app sets. None of that ships on the Play Store version, which is what pulls in people who want more say over how their account looks and what it gives away.
Since it is a community build and not an official release, Black WhatsApp comes as a direct APK instead of through Google Play. That is the trade-off. You get more features and theming, but you have to sideload it and accept the risks that come with an unofficial client.
A look at the interface

What this mod offers
- True-black dark theme
An all-black interface across chats, calls, and settings. Easier on the eyes at night, and lighter on OLED battery than the stock theme.
- Privacy controls
Hide your last-seen, freeze your online status, switch off blue ticks and typing indicators, and pick who sees what on a per-contact basis.
- App lock
Built-in PIN, pattern, password, and fingerprint locks keep the app shut even when your phone is already unlocked.
- Themes and fonts
A theme store plus custom fonts, icons, and accent colors let you restyle the look far beyond the single dark base.
- Higher sharing limits
Send larger files, more photos at once, and longer status clips than the caps the official client puts in place.
- Anti-ban patch
The build refreshes its identifiers to lower the odds of an account flag. No mod can promise the official servers will never act, though.
How to install
This is the standard Android sideload flow. If your file manager already has permission to install apps, it takes only a few taps.
- Back up your chats first
Open your current WhatsApp, head to chat backup, and save a local copy so your history survives the switch between clients.
- Download the APK
Tap the download button on this page. The file lands in your default Downloads folder.
- Allow installs from this source
In Settings, search
Install unknown apps, find your browser or file manager, and turn the permission on. - Open the file and install
Tap the downloaded APK, look over the permissions, and confirm. Let the progress bar finish.
- Verify your number
Open the app, enter your phone number, complete the SMS code, and restore your local backup when it asks.
